Lower Elementary

Lower elementary students are eager to learn about where they fit into society and the global community. Students study cultures throughout time and across the globe through the lens of the fundamental needs of man. Students imagination grows immensely at this age, inspiring them to learn about subjects ranging from microscopic creatures to the analysis of distances between stars. In science, Students research, classify, observe and conduct experiments in science. Math operations build number sense as well as the understanding of process, and accuracy in computation. Language materials help students to see the importance of structure to create meaning. Materials across the curriculum foster the optimum development of reading and writing skills.

Lower elementary students use self-correcting, hands on materials to discover and learn concepts. These science based materials introduce complex and abstract concepts concretely. Ultimately children build from concrete experiences and move to an abstract awareness of concepts.

The classroom is designed to encourage a positive learning environment and to foster independence. Daily, three hour uninterrupted work periods offer students the opportunity to engage deeply with their work and the flexibility to manage and complete work at their own pace. Children learn to initiate, choose, and complete work independently. Teachers closely observe each student’s progress, teach individual and group lessons, and offer students support that is non-intrusive, but fosters self-discovery. Children learn to set goals, organize work, and manage time using personal work plans.

Students collaborate and problem solve in class meetings, fostering social and cooperative skills as well as offering a platform for student voice.  Students are responsible for the care of themselves and classmates as well as the maintenance of the classroom.
