Upper Elementary

Students in the upper elementary classroom engage in self-directed inquiry, research and problem solving. Students move away from using concrete materials as they build greater abstract understanding of concepts. The Upper Elementary Montessori learning environment reflects activities that provide deeper educational experiences in the areas of mathematics (including geometry and algebra), science and technology, great literature, history, functional and political world geography, civics, economics, anthropology, and areas of art, music, foreign language, physical education and computer technology.

Teachers provide lessons that promote student inquiry and discussion. Students have opportunities to plan, monitor and assess their own work, thereby further developing their independence and responsibility for their own actions. Students build skills in time management, organization, and setting reasonable, responsible goals.

Students leave the school in small groups for “going outs,” accessing resources in the community as an extension of their research and to gain experiences in the world outside the classroom. The children develop independence, resourcefulness, and self-confidence through functioning capably in the larger world without adult assistance.

Students at the Upper Elementary level engage in individual work as well as collaborative activities in both small and larger groups. They collaborate and problem solve in class meetings, fostering social and cooperative skills as well as offering a platform for student voice.  Students are responsible for the care of themselves and classmates as well as the maintenance of the classroom.
