Primary

The child between ages 3 and 6 has an intrinsic need for order, combined with an innate ability to absorb information from their surroundings, according to Dr. Montessori. The Primary classroom is designed to facilitate the child’s one intuitive aim: self development. Through interaction with the Primary classroom environment, the child works to construct himself.

Primary students engage with with self correcting, didactic materials sequentially organized into curricular areas include practical life skills, vocabulary development, sensorial awareness, math, language arts, handwriting, sciences, geography, history, art, and music.  Students spend time manipulating each material, building their sense of order, movement coordination, and fine and gross motor skills. In the Primary classroom, each item has its place. This strengthens the student’s sense of order and provides a sense of security in the world upon which the child can depend.

The teacher has a strong relationship with each student. Teachers individualize instruction based on the developmental, emotional, social and academic abilities of each child. Students choose activities based on their interests, as well as suggestions from their peers and teachers.

Students learn to care for the classroom environment, themselves, and their peers. A sense of responsibility is fostered, as students are encouraged to share materials, complete each activity, and return the materials in good condition for other children to use.
